Cybersecurity story series
A fictional incident at Nordvik Polymers, a manufacturing company where nothing seems to be happening — until it is. The story begins with a quiet scan of a public address in the middle of the night, and follows the technical failures and organisational decisions as events unfold.
Three episodes will be published each week throughout October 2026.
At 2:13am on a Friday, an automated scanner reaches Nordvik Polymers' public IP address. Most requests fail. Then it hits an old, forgotten remote-access service — which answers with a login page and, somewhere behind that, its name and version.
Monday's operations meeting at Nordvik Polymers runs on time: a jamming printer, an overdue migration, a stalled MFA rollout. Nobody mentions Friday's 2:24am login from an unfamiliar network — because nobody except the monitoring platform knows about it.
The visitors spend Tuesday like well-behaved new employees: reading documentation, browsing file shares, collecting account names and network diagrams. Then they search the shares for the word 'password' — and an old printer-fix script makes the rest of the week much easier.
BACKUP_01 stands in its own rack at the far end of the server room, connected with a green cable instead of the usual yellow one. Everyone at Nordvik Polymers calls it separate — in audits, in insurance questionnaires. The visitors don't see the differently coloured cable, and examine it anyway.
